The mental health of students attending Christian universities is of utmost importance. To ensure that students are able to thrive in their academic and personal lives, many universities have implemented mental health services and initiatives. Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, Texas, for example, has seen a 48 percent increase in demand for mental health services since the start of the pandemic. The Mental Health Counseling Center at TCU offers psychological treatment and recovery services for students with mental health or psychological problems.
The Center's goal is to provide support and assistance to students in order to facilitate a successful university experience. The center's staff consists of licensed providers who are experts in the field of university mental health and work closely with providers in the Fort Worth community. The University of California at Santa Barbara also benefits from the Healthy Campus Network initiative, which encompasses the entire University of California system. This initiative implements a variety of wellness programs every year. Similarly, the University of California at Berkeley has access to wellness programs thanks to the University of California's system-wide initiative, Healthy Campus Network. In an informal survey of leaders from 32 schools that belong to the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), two-thirds said that demand for mental health services increased during the pandemic, while even more (78%) saw signs of distress among students, such as difficulties with homework, participation and attendance. It is evident that Christian universities are taking proactive steps to ensure that their students have access to the mental health support they need.
By providing counseling services, implementing wellness initiatives, and monitoring signs of distress among students, universities are helping to create a safe and supportive environment for their students.
